Aurora, octopuses and a cosmic monochord

Étienne Léopold Trouvelot drew the sky by hand at a time when cameras could not yet see that far. Three more of his chromolithographs join The Night Sky: an aurora, the planet Jupiter and the great nebula in Orion.

Also new: three plates from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (octopuses, spiders and bristle worms), Robert Fludd's divine monochord and his organ and clock tower from 1617, and a page of squirrels and a monkey from Albertus Seba's eighteenth-century thesaurus.
